The (other) Google veteran behind Instagram's ad push
Facebook-owned Instagram plans to begin selling ads during the next year and is working out how to integrate ads without disturbing users, said its director of business operations, Emily White, in this interview. White, a former Google employee who was hired and mentored by Facebook operating chief Sheryl Sandberg, is responsible for creating the service's ad model and meets regularly with major brands. "We want to make money in the long term, but we don't have any short-term pressure," White said. How social networking drives hardware innovation
The way people use Facebook is driving research in the long-term data-storage arena, says Frank Frankovsky, the social network's vice president for hardware design and supply-chain operations. People need rapid, reliable access to photos and postings from years ago, requiring colossal archival backups that are more accessible and robust than conventional tape or hard-drive systems. "These are the most precious memories from people's lives, so the preservation of that data is something we consider a very high priority," Frankovsky says. All Things D (9/9)

Ideas in Action
Dunkin' Donuts to show a Vine-made TV spot tonight
During tonight's "Monday Night Football" pregame show, Dunkin' Donuts will air what is believed to be the first-ever TV ad made from a single Vine video. Dunkin' Donuts' ad will run as an animated billboard unit between segments, with the company planning three more throughout the season. "We think a billboard using Vine is dramatically more engaging" than just a logo, said Scott Hudler, vice president of global consumer engagement at Dunkin' Brands. Adweek (9/8)

As baseball fans go social, franchises follow suit
Baseball fans are heading to social media sites to trade zingers and trash talk ahead of big games, and teams are paying attention. Social media users aren't a major source of revenue for baseball teams, but that's expected to change in future. "That's where the fans, certainly a lot of young fans, hang out. And while they might not be fans who are spending a lot of money right now, we think down the road they will be," says Bob Bowman, CEO of Major League Baseball's Advanced Media division. Big-box retailers used social media to drive foot traffic ahead of the new school year, with varying degrees of success. Prince was hardly treated like a king near Buckingham Palace
Police guarding Buckingham Palace intercepted a suspicious character strolling the grounds -- only to discover, after demanding ID, that the man in question was Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and the son of Queen Elizabeth II. Officers denied pointing guns at the royal scion, but admitted that a confrontation took place. "To describe the duke as unhappy and the two officers as highly embarrassed is the biggest understatement of the century," one reporter said. National Public Radio/The Two-Way blog (9/8)
