Facebook still trumps Twitter, Morgan Stanley says
Twitter is "inherently more complicated to understand" compared with Facebook, making it unlikely to achieve the same kind of market position as the industry leader, according to a Morgan Stanley report. The analysis, which sparked a slide in Twitter's shares, also noted that increasing competition for online ad dollars makes Twitter's long-term prospects far from clear. "[S]uccess is far from guaranteed at this early stage," the report says. MarketWatch (1/6), Fox Business (1/6)

Pinterest acquires startup to better know what users pin
Pinterest has bought image-recognition startup VisualGraph for an undisclosed amount as part of a bid to help the company "build technology to better understand what people are pinning," according to a spokeswoman. Image-recognition technology could help Pinterest to develop a tagging system for posts or to better tailor advertisements based on what people are posting. Twitter is bringing back retail politics, exec says
Politicians used to win votes by hitting the streets and shaking hands, and Twitter is bringing that back in digital form, says Adam Sharp, the network's head of government and nonprofits. Conventional shoe-leather politicking doesn't scale efficiently, but Twitter allows candidates to use retail-politics strategies for a wider audience, Sharp says. "Twitter allows for the return of direct one-on-one meaningful contact between candidates and voters," he says. ABC News/The Note blog (1/7)

Why social gambling is poised for growth
Social gambling sites are in their infancy, but could evolve far more rapidly than real-world casinos, FlowPlay CEO Derrick Morton says. That's because brick-and-mortar casinos are heavily regulated, making innovation difficult, but social gambling doesn't face the same barriers, he says. "I expect that the evolution of social casinos will run far ahead of real casinos, just because they're not as regulated," Morton says. Inside Facebook (1/6)

The Takeaway
Brands should pay more attention to social, experts say
Companies increasingly understand the need for a comprehensive, well-resourced digital-marketing strategy, but many still focus on SEO to the detriment of their social media efforts, experts say. "Most organizations have a pretty good handle on their SEO strategy, but are comparatively under-resourced on their social strategies," says Salesforce.com executive Paul Smith.
