Upgrades make Facebook ads more appealing to SMBs, experts say
A slew of upgrades have made Facebook's ad system far more appealing to small businesses, executives say. A tracking pixel introduced in June makes it easier to see which ads are bringing in customers, while better demographic targeting and placement options give brands more control over where and to whom their ads appear. That makes Facebook ads a legitimate rival to Google's AdWords, experts say. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (1/15)

Facebook reportedly plans to launch a reader application, similar in style to Flipboard, by the end of the month. The app, dubbed Paper, has been in development for years, and will aggregate news content and Facebook updates in a "visually stunning 'paper-like' format hearkening back to a time before digital devices," Mike Isaac writes. How a social network for doctors overtook the AMA
Doximity, a social network for doctors, has grown by 100% in the past year and has 250,000 members -- more than the 167-year-old American Medical Association, Rob Stott writes. That shows the need for associations to move away from "Industrial Age" thinking and embrace the social media era, says Anna Caraveli of The Demand Networks. "The LinkedIns and the Facebooks, this kind of collaborative thinking is the kind of format that consumers prefer today," Caraveli says. Associations Now online (1/15)

Courtney Love case could shape law on Twitter defamation
Courtney Love is being sued for a tweet that her former attorney Rhonda Holmes had been "bought off," and the case could reshape the rules surrounding online defamation. A judge has already rejected Love's claim that tweets are inherently exaggerated and inaccurate, and hence can't be used to libel people; still, experts say, the case could give rise to new ways to post corrections or retractions for inaccurate or defamatory tweets. Facebook study demonstrates value of car ads on its site
Car model websites see a 50% jump in site visits when Facebook ads are implemented, according to a comScore study commissioned by Facebook. Justin Bieber had better be a fast reader on Twitter
BuzzFeed's Charlie Warzel used a Tweetdeck tool to simulate celebrities' Twitter feeds, and the results are intriguing. A simulation of Kanye West's account shows only his own musings and those of his fiancée, Kim Kardashian; Justin Bieber's, meanwhile, is flooded with the inane chatter of more than 120,000 Beliebers, their messages scrolling past too quickly to be deciphered.
