Politicians go social to put their spin on Obama's speech
Politicians turned to Twitter, Instagram and Vine before, during and after the State of the Union address to try to shape public perceptions of President Barack Obama's speech. Democrats and Republicans used hashtags to rally their supporters, with the GOP also setting up "recording stations" where lawmakers could tape quick, sharable responses to the speech. "Conventional wisdom is like fast-drying concrete in the Twitter age -- it doesn't take long to harden. Twitter is one of the fastest ways to shape opinion," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Users log into social networks and are presented with their history of brand interactions, which can then be "wiped" out of existence. "Loving a brand doesn't mean you love it forever popping up in your newsfeed," the website says. ClickZ (1/27)

What Twitter bots can reveal about humanity
Computer programmer Darius Kazemi has created several Twitter bots, including one that explains other users' jokes and another that places random Amazon orders. His projects have won a wide following, and are a powerful exploration of the role of both Twitter and automation in modern society, Leon Neyfakh writes. "By imitating humans in ways both poignant and disorienting, Kazemi's bots focus our attention on the power and the limits of automated technology," Neyfakh writes.
