Brands can expand posts beyond Google+ with new ad unit
Google+ posts from brands can now be promoted to users across the entire Google Display Network, and marketers will only pay when users hover over the ad to expand it. Launch partners for the unit, called +Post ads, include Toyota, Orange, and Mondelez's Ritz Crackers and Cadbury U.K., and supported content covers photos, videos and Google Hangouts. The unit "lets brands think of the entire Web as their social stream," said Google. TechCrunch (12/9), Advertising Age (free access for SmartBrief readers) (12/9), VentureBeat (12/9)

Facebook hires AI expert, plans research lab
Facebook has hired an expert in artificial intelligence, Yann LeCun, and says it will open a research lab dedicated to exploring "deep learning" and developing more naturalistic machine-human interfaces. Facebook's interest in AI is intriguing, but mostly for what it says about the company's long-term trajectory, Gary Marcus writes. "The nuances of human expression, verbal and otherwise, are something that A.I. scientists have yet to teach a machine how to decode," Marcus writes. Twitter's stock rises as Wall Street warms to social media
Twitter's share price climbed almost 10% on Monday, a sign that investors are upbeat about the social network's new advertising features. "We're seeing that there's a lot they can do with targeting and retargeting for advertisers," says Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Brian Nowak. "Over time it will help them grow into their valuation." Reuters (12/9), Bloomberg (12/9)

Study: Taking a picture doesn't make memories last longer
People who document every moment of their lives with digital photos are filtering their experiences and subsequently have less recollection of them than they would have done if they'd left their cameras at home, according to a study by Linda Henkel of Fairfield University. "This might be something to try to remember next time you're considering filling up that next Facebook album," James Vincent writes. The Independent (London) (tiered subscription model) (12/10)

The Takeaway
Rise of the marketing robots? Not so fast
Brands that try to replace social media marketers with 'bots and automated social media accounts are going to fall on their faces, Mark Smith writes. Automation is a powerful tool, but it still requires a human's judgment to deploy effectively, Smith writes. "Perfecting your social marketing is an art, not a science. Successfully mastering the art lies somewhere in between fully-automated social robots and a human team," he writes. iMedia Connection (12/10)

How to leverage social media for valuable insights
Paying attention to what your customers are saying on social media can be a relatively low-cost method for gaining valuable insights, write Susan Fournier and Bob Rietveld. Among other things, they stress the need to make sure the information you gather through social channels is reliable and to compare and contrast it with the feedback you're getting from other sources.
