Apple edges into social media with acquisition of analytics firm
Apple is expected to get into social media analytics with its purchase of Topsy Labs, whose specialty is Twitter. Topsy categorizes messages on the social network to help identify key subjects, Twitter users and events. Advertisers, media companies and developers all "would appreciate having access to more of this real-time data. Now Apple has a new tool to help the companies that use its services become better, smarter marketers," eMarketer's Debra Aho Williamson says. The saucy salsa Twitter spat that didn't actually happen
Salsa-maker Pace appeared to get into a spat with comedian Kyle Kinane on Twitter this week, culminating with a botched attempt to bribe the comic via private messages. Only one problem -- the Twitter handle involved in the brouhaha didn't actually belong to Pace, and had been set up and maintained for months by a rival comedian hoping to prank Kinane. How Foursquare changes public spaces
Foursquare can radically change the ways in which public spaces are used and perceived, at least for people who use the service heavily, Cornell University researchers say. A study found that super-users were more aware of and more likely to interact with those around them. "Foursquare clearly created heightened awareness of the people around them, and a stronger connection to the actual places where those encounters might take place," Emily Badger writes. How a Gawker editor crafts must-share content
Gawker editor Neetzan Zimmerman spends his days trawling the Web for content that will get traction on social networks, and he says he has developed a sort of sixth sense for the kind of content that's likely to go viral. Zimmerman takes his job seriously, and says that viral content is a true reflection of people's real concerns. "For me to be plugged into this stuff is like being plugged into the foundation of man," he says. "This is the stuff that people really care about, not the stuff that they're pretending to care about at cocktail parties." The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (12/1)

How brands can make the most of Twitter
Twitter is a powerful marketing tool, and brands are seeing big success with campaigns that link social chatter to real-world consumer activity, writes Roger Katz. The key is to make that transition as seamless as possible, and to make it easy for users slip into relationships with a brand. "Particularly on Twitter, it's absolutely critical to avoid friction-filled forms and steps at that first touchpoint, especially those that are in any way mobile-unfriendly," Katz writes.
