Facebook brings direct messaging to Instagram
Facebook has updated Instagram to allow users to send videos and photos directly to up to 15 friends through a service called Instagram Direct. The move was likely inspired by increasing competition from Snapchat and free messaging applications such as WhatsApp, and comes after reports that Facebook's attempts to buy Snapchat were rebuffed. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said the feature is "like gathering people around a photo, a moment, and being able to have a conversation about them." Twitter quickly changes course on tweak to its blocking policy
Twitter on Thursday quickly reversed a change to its policy on blocking users following a wave of protests over the tweak, which allowed a blocked user to still follow the tweets of the blocker. "We have decided to revert the change after receiving feedback from many users -- we never want to introduce features at the cost of users feeling less safe," Twitter's Michael Sippey wrote in a post on the company's blog. Viral ads don't always succeed where it counts
Kmart has enjoyed a year of great viral success, making pass-along hits of naughty videos with its pun-filled "Ship My Pants," "Big Gas Savings" and "Show Your Joe" ads. But same-store sales were down 2.1% in the third quarter, matching the Q2 slide and revealing that the ads likely didn't help Kmart's bottom line. Dove's "Beauty Sketches" and Geico's "Hump Day" ads rank high for sharing as well, but don't show up on some indices that track successful messaging and calls to action. "We've found likability doesn't correlate to much," says Gary Getto, president of Advertising Benchmark Index. Mashable (12/12)

Enhance your trade-show visibility with social media connections
Small and midsized businesses spend about 40% of their business-to-business marketing budget on trade shows, but many miss out on opportunities to improve brand visibility at these shows, Anand Srinivasan writes. Engaging with trade-show contacts on social media can help establish relationships and expand word-of-mouth reach in the event hall, he writes. "Most importantly, such social media campaigns are free to integrate with very minimal inventories required," Srinivasan writes. Social Media Today (12/12)

This new Instagram feature is kind of like Snapchat without the snap, or like Twitter direct messages, but with a group. It's like everybody is getting together and thinking, 'How can we offer the same thing?' "
