IPO filing: Twitter is unprofitable despite strong mobile business
Twitter generates 65% of its advertising revenue through mobile ads, according to a regulatory filing preceding its initial public offering that indicates the social network is seeking to raise $1 billion. Twitter averaged 218 million monthly active users in the second quarter, a 44% increase from the year before, and it posted first-half 2013 revenues of $253.6 million, the filing says. Despite that growth, Twitter has yet to turn a profit, according to the filing. Facebook announces that ads are coming to Instagram
Facebook on Thursday announced that advertisements will begin to appear on Instagram, which hasn't generated any revenue yet for Facebook despite its $1 billion price tag. Instagram ads will aim to be understated, and the company will incorporate user feedback into its deployments, an unidentified spokesman said. "Seeing photos and videos from brands you don't follow will be new, so we'll start slow. We'll focus on delivering a small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos from a handful of brands," the spokesman said. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (10/3)

How Oracle, Cisco and others are proving Instagram's B2B appeal
Instagram is often seen as a space just for consumer-facing operations, but business-to-business companies find success when they focus on community, culture and brand marketing, Allen Gannett writes. Brands such as Oracle and Cisco highlight their culture and community commitment with photos of volunteer work and social events. Proper B2B brand marketing and sharing on Instagram also require an understanding of hashtags, Gannett writes. HubSpot.com (10/3)

Facebook leads social channels in ad-campaign preference
Facebook has a considerable lead over other social networks at landing brand campaigns, a Strata survey of U.S. ad execs indicates. Ninety percent of the executives said they were likely to use Facebook for clients' social campaigns, compared with 55% for YouTube and 53% for Twitter. Still, the percentage of ad-budget allocation to social media remains low, with nearly 6 in 10 agency clients apportioning 5% or less, and 19% of respondents saying they see no return on investment from their social efforts. eMarketer (10/4)

The biggest ways companies mess up on social media
Failing to develop an authentic personality and avoiding controversy and criticism are two of the biggest mistakes companies can make on social media, Christian Schappel writes. Companies should also make sure to provide incentives for people to follow their accounts, and those accounts should be put "in the hands of marketing or communications professionals," Schappel adds.
