Twitter sets cautious price range for IPO
Twitter will seek to raise up to $1.4 billion in its initial public offering, setting a share-price range of $17 to $20, which would value the network at about $11 billion. That relatively modest valuation suggests that Twitter is eager to avoid a replay of Facebook's aggressive IPO as it seeks to win over investors who remain wary of the network's mobile business model. Ignore the naysayers: Why Pinterest is the real deal
Pinterest this week raised $225 million in a fundraising effort that values the social network at $3.8 billion, twice the value of The New York Times. That suggests it's time to start believing in the female-focused network, despite the early doubts of largely male analysts, Kevin Roose writes. "Undoubtedly, there were many male, scrapbooking-averse venture capitalists who pooh-poohed Pinterest until they saw its user statistics, saw the dollar signs materialize, and changed their minds," Roose writes. Instagram ad demo prepares users for coming rollout
Instagram will start photo- and video-ad campaigns as early as next week, and the social network sent out a sample ad to users on Thursday to prep them for the look. The ads will get a further rollout in the "coming week" and will feature a "Sponsored" note, the company said. Instagram's "approach to monetizing the platform is so careful you could almost characterize it as curatorial," said Rebecca Lieb, a digital advertising and media analyst at Altimeter Group. Study: Facebook is an accidental news service
About a third of Americans get their news on Facebook, a study says, but almost 80% of those people log onto Facebook for other reasons, and read shared news stories by chance.
