Report cites a surge in social media spam
Social media spam went through the roof in the first six months of 2013, increasing 355%, according to a report from Nexgate. About 1 in every 200 social media posts is spam, the report found, with 5% of all social media applications seriously affected by spammers. "[S]ocial spam is becoming a real business for spammers. You can see it in the increasing sophistication and diversification of the mechanisms used to distribute spam, and not just in the increase in volume," Nexgate CEO Devin Redmond said in a statement. Why Facebook's TV-interaction numbers are suspect
Facebook's method of determining interactions related to TV content is designed to make the numbers appear significantly larger than Twitter's TV-tweet totals, and is "not a fair comparison," Sarah Perez writes. While Facebook is taking steps to improve its social TV data, Twitter "is for now ahead of Facebook" when it comes to complementing television, Perez writes. TechCrunch (9/30)

Does Facebook make you blue?
A growing body of research suggests that Facebook use correlates with feelings of dissatisfaction with life -- a sign, Travis Riddle writes, that online interactions are a poor substitute for real-world relationships. "It remains to be definitively established that Facebook itself is a problem, but real-life interaction is absolutely something our extraordinarily social species benefits from, and we should make every attempt to maximize our intake of this form of socialization," Riddle writes.
