Can Myspace win over marketers?
Myspace's music-centered relaunch is paying dividends, with analysts impressed by the revamped social network's redesign and business strategy. Still, it will require significant user growth before Myspace becomes a favorite of social media marketers. "No question there's going to be an uphill battle based on preconceived notions. I would love for them to succeed, but they're really not part of the active consideration set," said Gian LaVecchia of MEC. Advertising Age (tiered subscription model) (10/1)

Analysis: Twitter will face more calls to go mainstream
Twitter has had a big effect on U.S. popular culture, but it doesn't have the user base to match, analysts say. That could pose a bigger problem once the company goes public and investors begin demanding bigger returns. "User base and growth have not been a problem to date, but Twitter is going to have to find a good system to reach tomorrow's Twitter users or eventually it will be a problem," said Max Wolff of Greencrest Capital. What Coach is doing wrong on social media
Coach is establishing a strong social media presence, but it's making some big mistakes along the way, David Moth writes. The company responds to tweeted complaints, but fails to retweet positive mentions, meaning its Twitter account is flooded with negative comments. And the company's Pinterest account fails to post third-party content, so it falls short of being a space for genuine social engagement, Moth writes. eConsultancy.com (10/1)

Shutdown affects government social media accounts
Some government social media accounts are going dark because of the federal shutdown, although some agencies say they'll use essential, nonfurloughed personnel to maintain a skeleton social media service during the government's closure. "Unless an emergency, it should be reasonably expected that most accounts will cease engaging & posting, as with other services," the General Services Administration tweeted before the shutdown began. Why the social media manager is dying a quick death
Companies no longer need dedicated social media managers, but instead need a broad mix of socially savvy workers in a range of senior and junior positions, HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes writes. How your Twitter bio can repel potential followers
Most potential followers of your Twitter account likely make up their minds about your worthiness in seconds, so your Twitter bio should avoid obvious turnoffs, Amy-Mae Elliott writes. For starters, you're probably not a "guru" or a "maven," so don't describe yourself as one. Also, be sure to add a representative photo, don't write your bio in third person and don't tweet too often or use only auto-generated tweets. "Twitter is about engagement, not just broadcasting meaningless words," Elliot writes. Mashable (9/30)

Haunting photos show toxic lake's effect on birds
A lake in Tanzania has been so badly polluted by volcanic ash that any animal that immerses itself in the water dies, and their bodies calcify into fossil-like statues. Photographer Nick Brandt documents the bizarre, almost perfectly preserved remains of flamingos, doves and eagles killed by the lake's deadly waters. New Scientist (9/28)
