Facebook to allow teens' posts to be seen by anyone
Facebook announced Wednesday that it will ease privacy restrictions for teenagers, allowing youths between 13 and 17 to post status updates, videos and images that can be seen by the public. Previously, teens' activity was accessible only by their friends and people who know their friends. The company says the move is intended to give teens more choices, but some child advocates are questioning it. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (10/16)

Twitter investors must take a leap of faith, analysts say
Twitter's public stock offering will give investors a chance to buy into an exciting brand, but also an unproven one, analysts say. The company's losses and sluggish user growth make the company a risky proposition for investors, some say. "If they can't make the transition from capturing market share to generating income, they're going to run out of money eventually," says Brian Frank of Frank Capital Partners. Reuters (10/16)

Why UCB Pharma's social media focus is customer connections
UCB Pharma doesn't talk about products on social media, but instead seeks to encourage customers to share their stories and connect with other people and with doctors. Because the pharmaceutical industry is heavily regulated, keeping the C-suite and legal team informed about social media is also a must, says Greg Cohen, UCB Pharma's social media manager. Real-time marketing can work if it's relevant, tasteful
Real-time marketing can work, but only if brands make sure to stay relevant and avoid distasteful takes on new events, a study indicates. A Wonderful Pistachios TV ad that relied on a tough-as-nails honey badger led to 279 million exposures over three months, while American Apparel's tactless "Hurricane Sandy Sale" dropped its sentiment score by 60 points in one day, according to Topsy.
